Apple (
AAPL) finally unveiled its much anticipated and rumored tablet computer -- the iPad. For the past couple of years, many wondered why Apple never got into the netbook market. Steve Jobs, Apple's founder, CEO and visionary explained that netbooks simply are not better than laptops. The iPad, however, according to Jobs is.
Specs, from Engadget: The
Apple iPad weighs just 1.5 pounds, and has a 9.7-inch touchscreen LCD display. It's running Apple's own 1GHz "A4" chip, with a 10-hour battery life and a month of standby. It'll come in three sizes and prices points: 16GB -- sold for $499, 32GB -- sold for $599, and 64GB -- $699.

The DJIA has not moved much since mid-month and today was no exception with all three major indexes close to flat.
The Conference Board said that its Consumer Confidence Index rose to 52.9 for December, up from up from 50.6 in November. Both numbers are extremely low compared to a reading of closer to 90 in an expanding economy. The S&P/Case-Shiller index of home price rose a tiny .4% from September to October, but the most recent figure for the housing market was still down 7.3% from last year. Housing prices may be about to find a bottom, but, if so, the case for it is still shaky.
The unofficial closing bell numbers:
Dow 10,545.41 -1.67 (-0.02%)
S&P 500 1,126.19 -1.59 (-0.14%)
Nasdaq 2,288.40 -2.68 (-0.12%)

This morning, Nokia (
NOK) -- primarily known for its presence in the mobile phone arena -- announced that it is
filing suits against some liquid crystal display (LCD) makers. NOK believes that these LCD producers are engaging in a bit of price fixing. It filed suits in the U.S. and Britain last month.
NOK believes that a group of manufacturers was fixing the prices of LCDs that the company uses in its handsets and of cathode ray tubes. The company said that it "has filed suits to recover overcharges it paid as a result of cartel activities which are currently under governmental investigation."

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says taking down all of software on the back of this outlook is a mistake. And on the fifth down day, we decided that
SAP's (NYSE:
SAP) (
Cramer's Take) butt getting kicked means the industry is faltering? This is the thought that went through my head when I saw SAP's disappointing news and its alibi that business is weak. That's why it stumbled. Of course, SAP's comments immediately took all of Europe down. Nobody said, "Hey, maybe it is SAP's fault because
Oracle's (NASDAQ:
ORCL) (
Cramer's Take) kicking their butt." No one said, "Sure it is weak, because in the end
Salesforce.com (NYSE:
CRM) (
Cramer's Take) got a better mousetrap."

Even for a company the size of Nokia (NYSE: NOK), a quarterly loss of $834 million is still a big deal. And, this is what the company posted for its Q3 report (it's the first net loss since 1996).
OK, the main reason for the red ink was the write-down of a joint venture with Siemens that develops network equipment. No doubt, the business has been brutal. But, Nokia somehow thinks there's potential for growth.

In the online music world, there is a trail of dead companies. But, some have somehow found ways to not only survive -- but thrive. One is
Shazam, which builds applications for mobile phones.
This week, the firm hit 50 million users. And, it was also able to
secure venture funding from the premier VC firm, Kleiner Perkins (the other investors include Acacia Venture Partners and DN Capital). The amount was not disclosed.
What explains the success of Shazam? First of all, the company has cool technology that lets your phone hear a song and then it will figure out its name as well as the artist.
